Promoting Authentic Italian Dining Around the WorldPromoting Authentic Italian Dining Around the World

In an increasingly globalised hospitality industry, the “Ospitalità Italiana – Italian Restaurants in the World” certification stands out as a symbol of authenticity, quality and cultural identity. Promoted by Unioncamere with the operational support of IS.NA.R.T. (the National Institute of Research on Tourism, part of the Italian Chambers of Commerce system), the initiative seeks to preserve and celebrate the authenticity of Italian food, wine, and hospitality on the global stage.

One of the core objectives of the project is to protect the integrity of true Italian cuisine and combat the phenomenon of “Italian Sounding”, the misleading use of Italian names, imagery, or branding to market products that have no real link to Italy. Through rigorous certification standards, “Ospitalità Italiana” offers consumers a reliable guarantee of authenticity while reinforcing the reputation of the Made in Italy brand.

The initiative is governed by a dedicated Coordination Committee, which has developed and maintains a set of technical specifications that restaurants must meet to qualify. These include the use of genuine Italian ingredients, respect for traditional recipes, Italian-speaking staff, and an overall dining experience that reflects Italy’s cultural and culinary identity.

In South Africa, ItalCham has played a vital role in promoting the project and supporting its local implementation. In 2024, the Chamber coordinated outreach efforts, collected applications, and verified that participating restaurants and pizzerias met all the required criteria.

As a result, 11 South African establishments were awarded the “Ospitalità Italiana” label, an important step not only in recognising the excellence of local Italian dining, but also in reinforcing the presence of authentic Italian culture and food in the country.

ItalCham remains committed to the initiative and is actively working to expand the network of certified establishments. In fact, a new edition of the project is already being planned for 2026, with the aim of including more restaurants, pizzerias, and gelaterie that meet the required standards and share a dedication to preserving Italy’s culinary heritage.

For restaurateurs, the “Ospitalità Italiana” certification is more than just a badge of honour, it is a powerful tool for standing out in a competitive market. It boosts visibility, builds trust with consumers, and connects certified restaurants to an international network.

For guests, it offers the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are enjoying an experience that is truly and authentically Italian, from the carefully sourced ingredients to the traditional preparation methods and warm, welcoming service.

Ultimately, “Ospitalità Italiana” is not only a quality label but a strategic initiative that promotes Italian excellence and defends the credibility of the Made in Italy brand, fostering cultural connections through the universal language of food.
